Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Responds to COVID-19

When the time comes to return to work, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is ready, and safety is their priority.  WMATA has taken steps in response to COVID-19 and to ensure a safe commute.

  • WMATA offers discounts and added more trains and buses to ease your return to ridership.
  • Face masks are required, and riders are reminded to keep their nose and mouth covered while riding. Please follow these other common-sense measures: Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer, please stay home if you are ill, and keep a safe distance from other customers and drivers.
  • WMATA provides regular updates on ridership and confirmed cases during the pandemic.
  • Real-time information is provided to inform customers on an estimation of how many people are on the bus before it arrives.
  • Shared spaces are cleaned and disinfected frequently on buses, trains and in stations
  • Close attention is given to air ventilation and filtration. Air completely refreshes every 3 minutes.

WMATA earned the Health & Safety Commitment seal from the American Public Transportation Association for their regular cleaning, disinfecting, and pledging to follow all public health guidelines and protect their riders. Visit the WMATA for additional information on how they are keeping the Washington region moving.
