Opening June 2017, the Northwest Child Care Center (NWCCC) will serve 170 children in a beautiful new campus child care facility. The NWCCC is located on the NIH Bethesda campus across the street from the Clinical Center, between the Children’s Inn and the NIH Fire Department. This state-of-the-art facility will boast a green roof and numerous other environmentally beneficial features, nestled into the wooded area along the fence lining Cedar Lane.
The NWCCC serves children between the ages of six weeks to six years of age. There are four rooms for children under the age of two years (42 spaces), four rooms for two year old’s (48 spaces), and four rooms for preschool children ages three through five years (80 spaces). The center will be open from 7:30 am to 6:00 pmm Monday through Friday, except on federal holidays. There is, and will continue to be, a wait list for spaces in the NWCCC, as well as the other NIH sponsored child care centers.
This center could not have been possible without the partnership and commitment between the Office of Research Facilities (ORF) and the Office of Research Services (ORS). The construction schedule is under the oversight of the ORF team led by Ms. Stephanie Hixson, Deputy Director, Division of Design and Construction Management, and Lieutenant Commander Corey Cosgrove. The program requirements are led by the ORS, Division of Amenities and Transportation Services (DATS), Child and Family Programs team: Ms. Mary Ellen Savarese, Ms. Tonya Lee, and Ms. Linda Owen. The teams are particularly proud of the building’s LEED Silver certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification system. The center is being constructed by John C. Grimberg Co., Inc.
The child care provider for the new center is Rockville Day Care Association, Inc. (RDCA). RDCA is a private, non-profit, tax exempt, Maryland Corporation that began in 1969. RDCA is a multi-site provider, serving infants/toddlers through school agers, in Montgomery County, Maryland. RDCA was selected for its long-standing reputation in the community and professional expertise in providing quality children’s programs, which is reflected in their philosophy, practices and parent engagement. RDCA’s curriculum model follows the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) approved Creative Curriculum©. This model is aligned with the philosophy of the National
Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and is designed to foster social, emotional, physical, creative and intellectual development through play and exploration. RDCA’s motto is: Learning Naturally Through Play!
