Child and Family Program Updates

NIH Childcare Centers have done a phenomenal job caring for the children and families throughout the COVID pandemic and variants. It's always uplifting that amidst continued COVID, changing policies, and even some room closures, the staff and children are happy to be in the building surrounded by others. Recently, the Parenting Listserv boasted many wonderfully positive comments about the NIH Childcare Centers from parents who are thrilled about their child's experiences and growth. This spring and into the summer, many of the “specials" programs and trips have returned to the excitement of the parentes, children and staff.

Here is an update on some of the activities happening at our three centers.

The halls at the Parents of Preschoolers, Inc. (POPI) are filled with joyful singing voices, thanks to Mr. Dave, a music teacher who visits weekly. The children are also engaged in outdoor fun with Soccer Bugs, a group that provides soccer skill development. Spanish and karate lessons have been added to the weekly schedule. The Great Zucchini is an educational entertainer who wows the children  with an interactive, silly, highly creative and magical performance. To top things off, the center hosted the Squeals on Wheels Petting Zoo.

At the Executive Child Development Center (ECDC), trips to Harpers Ferry, Sharps Farm, and the swimming pool were huge hits. They also ventured away from the center to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, and the National Museum of African Art.

Northwest Child Care Center (Rockville Day Care Association-RDCA) has focused on creating a fun learning environment that ensured children had the opportunity to safely come together to build friendships and develop lifelong social skills, such as sharing, setting boundaries and problem-solving. The summer themes integrated all aspects of learning, exploring, character building and personal growth while encouraging children to benefit from the simplicity of life while creating lasting childhood memories.

The NIH Childcare Programs are busy preparing for the fall and the administrative staff is contacting parents who are currently on the Waiting List for placement. Please share your experiences with the childcare programs and colleagues. Invite them to look at the wonderful offerings at NIH. Parents seeking enrollment, please keep your waitlist profiles updated. If you are interested in a tour of the centers, you should contact the center Director:
