At the NIH Director’s Award Ceremony on September 1, Kirkland Davis from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) received the first ever “Work/Life and Well-Being Champion” award. Sponsored by the Office of Human Resources (OHR) and the Office of Research Services (ORS), this award recognizes a supervisor’s exceptional performance or special efforts in supporting employees’ work/life and well-being while maintaining or improving productivity in support of the agency’s mission. Employee well-being is defined holistically across five dimensions, including: physical and mental wellness, work schedule flexibilities, social well-being, financial fitness and community involvement.

This award underscores the importance NIH places on its employees’ well-being. According to ORS Acting Director, Tim Tosten, “supervisors can have a big impact on employees’ holistic well-being. Whether informing employees of helpful NIH child care resources, or effectively managing multiple employees’ flexible work arrangements, supervisors’ efforts can make a huge difference in employees’ ability to thrive at work and home. When NIH employees are individually thriving, the NIH organization as a whole will be better able to accomplish its mission.”
