Updates on VisitNIH

As part of NIH's ongoing implementation of VisitNIH, part of the Visitor Access Management Initiative, NIH is providing updates about VisitNIH.

Montgomery County, MD

  • NIH recently implemented the updated visitor requirements at the remaining Montogomery County, Maryland, leased facilities.
  • As of October 13, 2025, any non-U.S. person who does not complete the VisitNIH pre-registration or were not approved will not be able to access the NIH facilities in Montgomery County. All non-U.S. person visitors coming to these facilities are required to have an escort.

Phoenix, AZ

  • Beginning January 5, 2026, NIDDK Phoenix staff are expected to begin pre-registering any non-U.S. person visitors with planned visits in February 2026 and beyond.
  • As of February 9, 2026, non-U.S. person visitors who do not complete the VisitNIH pre-registration and do not receive approval will not be able to access the NIH facilities in Phoenix, AZ. Non-U.S. person visitors coming to these facilities are required to have an escort, with the exception of patients and up to two caregivers.
  • Note: Patients and caregivers visiting the NIDDK Guadalupe Clinic will not be required to pre-register at this time.

Visit Request Submission Deadlines

  • When completing the VisitNIH pre-registration process, HHS policy requires that non-U.S. person visitors submit the pre-registration form more than 10-full business days in advance of the event start date. Weekends, holidays and partial days do not count as a full business day.
  • Currently, less than 55% of visit request submissions are submitted on time or are considered complete for HHS to vet.
  • NIH still strongly recommends that non-U.S. person visitors complete the pre-registration process 30 days in advance to allow for the gathering of information and addressing of any potential errors in submissions.
