UpToDate: Evidence-Based Answers for Clinical Questions

The NIH Library provides NIH staff with full access to UpToDate, a clinical decision support tool that helps healthcare professionals make accurate, up-to-date diagnoses and treatment decisions at the point of care. Created by doctors for doctors, it offers over 12,000 peer-reviewed topics, medical calculators and drug interactions, and is available via web and mobile apps. UpToDate features extensive solutions; recent updates to the system include:

  • Expanded Continuing Medical Education (CME) options, including direct submission to additional specialty and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) boards
  • More detailed drug dosing guidance for vulnerable patient populations
  • Gene test interpretation monographs
  • Graphical summaries to support rapid clinical decision-making

 
Access
Go to UpToDate while on the NIH network/VPN to start using it. For additional features, register (see next step) for a personal UpToDate account:

  • Access UpToDate from anywhere, including on mobile devices
  • Download content for offline use
  • Earn continuing education credits (CME/CE/CPD)
  • Receive the bi-weekly UpToDate Clinical Newsletter
  • Use integrated patient education materials, calculators, drug interaction tools, medical graphics and links to full-text articles

 
Register

  • While on the NIH network/VPN, go to www.uptodate.com 
  • Select “Register" in the upper right corner
  • Complete and submit the registration form
  • Use your UpToDate account on your computer or install the UpToDate Mobile App on up to two devices
