Rock Springs Satellite Parking

The Division of Amenities and Transportation Services (DATS) will open a new satellite parking lot within a five-minute walk to the Rockledge I & II office buildings, as well as NIH offices in the Rock Spring complex. The parking lot will offer 400 additional parking spaces for parking overflow and visitors to NIH facilities.

A satellite parking lot is an off-campus parking lot open to anyone and does not have association with any specific building. The new satellite parking lot will undergo renovations to include fencing, line striping, improved lighting, and installation of a bus shelter and parking attendant booth. If all goes well, the work will be completed by the end of September 2021. The parking lot will be staffed by a parking attendant from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. A shuttle circulator will operate during peak times between the satellite parking lot and NIH buildings in the Rock Spring complex. In addition, the Rockledge shuttle will continue to operate two shuttles circulating between the Rock Spring complex, Rock Spring satellite parking lot, Medical Center Metro and the NIH main campus.

With the consolidation of office space and a reduction in foot traffic to the NIH, the new Rock Spring satellite parking lot should address the needs of employees, especially those concerned with the increase in employee density, matching parking capacity and availability.

Additional changes you will notice include the Montrose Commuter satellite parking lot and the NIH shuttle schedules. The Montrose Commuter satellite parking lot lease was terminated in December 2020 based on the lack of use (pre-COVID) and the availability of the additional 300 parking spaces at the Woodglen parking lot. The Woodglen satellite parking lot is located off Nicholson Lane and Woodglen Drive. In addition to the closure of the Montrose parking lot, the name of the Montrose shuttle will change to "Woodglen Shuttle." The new shuttle will improve accessibility between the NIH Training Center, the White Flint Towers, satellite parking, and the NIH main campus.

When the off-campus shuttles return to normal operations, the Woodglen shuttles will operate two shuttles servicing the Woodglen parking lot, White Flint Metro stops, and the NIH main campus. Additionally, one express shuttle from the parking lot to the White Flint Training Center will operate on a continuous loop during peak hours. NIH employees should also look for changes in both the Executive and Rockledge shuttle routes. Employees can view the shuttle schedules.
