The Division of Amenities and Transportation Services (DATS) offers a free Carpool and Vanpool Matching Service through its Employee Transportation Services Office (ETSO). This program is designed to assist NIH employees and contractors in finding suitable ridesharing partners, with the goal of reducing traffic congestion, decreasing pollution and alleviating commuting stress. Participants enjoy benefits such as reserved carpool parking, access to High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes and potential savings on fuel and vehicle maintenance.

There are several ways to find or register for a carpool or vanpool, utilizing tools like Commuter Connections or the DATS online system called CAPS:

  • Commuter Connections: This regional network, coordinated by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, offers a range of free services for commuters in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Their advanced ride-matching program connects individuals with similar commutes for carpooling or vanpooling. Additionally, Commuter Connections provides the Guaranteed Ride Home program, which ensures a free and reliable ride home in the event of unexpected emergencies, offering peace of mind for alternative commuters.
  • ETSO Rideshare System (CAPS): This system is tailored specifically for NIH staff and work locations. Simply input your commuting details and times to view current matches or receive notifications about potential matches in the future.

Both programs have successfully facilitated numerous ridesharing arrangements, contributing to a more efficient and environmentally friendly commuting experience.

If you're interested in joining a rideshare program or learning more about commuter services, visit the resources provided on the DATS website or contact the ETSO at nihparkingoffice@ors.od.nih.gov.
