ORS Immersion Program Gives Participants A Look At How ORS Works

Angelina was new to NIH and wanted to learn more about the campus, including what the ORS does and its impact. To learn more, Angelina, an Office Manager at NINDS, participated in the June 2018 ORS Immersion Program.

The Office of Research Services (ORS) Immersion Program provides Fellows/Interns and Administrative Officers (AOs) with an in-depth and behind the scenes experience with select ORS activities and services.  Developed in partnership with the NIH Administrative Training Committee, the program occurs three times each year. Twelve participants take part in each of the three sessions. Program participants visit 15 different ORS divisions/branches, hear from staff about their areas, its services and visit relevant facilities. Highlights include visiting the Division of Police (including the Canine Unit) and the Veterinary Resources animal facility. Jackie Glass works in the Division of Occupational Health and Safety (DOHS) and helps facilitate sessions for her division. "I enjoy showing participants what we do in DOHS.  Along with a coworker, we share information, take time for questions and make sure that the participants feel comfortable contacting us when necessary," Jackie said.

Angelina left the program with direct contacts in ORS. She uses her contacts on the job and as a volunteer in various work groups. As an active member of a seminar series committee, Angelina introduced the committee to the Medical Arts Branch. The Medical Arts team designed posters and flyers for the committee, increasing attendance at their seminars. "It was nice to have a name and a face and know that you've dealt with that person. That's easier," Angelina mentioned.

Angelina plans to continue using her ORS contacts, and encourages fellow coworkers to participate in the program. "When things don't pertain to you it's harder to appreciate them and that's with anything," she said. "This really opens it up, so you do get an opportunity to see [how ORS operates]."
