ORS Director & Occupational Health & Safety Division Director Win HHS Secretary's COVID-19 Recognition

Every year, HHS recognizes top individuals and teams for exceptional and meritorious achievements that contribute significantly to the Department's mission and goals. Staff were also awarded the Secretary's Commendation for their outstanding service and leadership during the Public Health Emergency phase of the COVID-19 Pandemic. This included six OD staff members, including ORS Director Colleen McGowan and  Division of Occupational Health and Safety Director Jessica McCormick-Ell.

The award recognizes exceptional service and leadership during the Public Health Emergency phase of the COVID-19 Pandemic. During incredible uncertainty and upheaval in workflows across campus, Colleen and Jessica's steadfast determination and grit ensured ORS remained nimble and effective. In acknowledging the Secretary's Commendation, Xavier Becerra wrote, “Their efforts and sacrifices over the past several years have been nothing short of heroic, and HHS Leadership is grateful for all that they have done for the Department and the Nation."

There were so many ORS employees who were deserving of this award. However The NIH could only select 20 people and 2 from ORS. Jessica McCormick-Ell and Colleen McGowan accepted on behalf of everyone involved.

While the pandemic is not over, the continued due diligence and efforts of Colleen, Jessica and other staff at NIH are employed every day to ensure the worst chapters are behind us. Many congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, Colleen and Jessica!
