Meet DATS Lead Interpreter, April Cook

The Division of Amenities and Transportation Services (DATS) welcomes April Cook as Lead Interpreter of its Interpreting Services Program. April brings 15 years of experience interpreting for the deaf and hard of hearing in a wide variety of settings. She comes from another federal agency, where she also served as a lead interpreter. As a lead interpreter, April will work on the main campus to coordinate the schedules of over 60 on-call interpreters, providing services to the NIH workforce, patients, and visitors every day. She will also fill in as needed.

April and her family moved from Austin, Texas to Maryland a little over a year ago and have fallen in love with the DMV area.   April has four grown adult children and a son in third  grade. She enjoys spending time with her family in the great outdoors, crocheting, DIY projects, and of course interpreting!  April is looking forward to meeting everyone over the next couple of months.

The Division of Amenities and Transportation Services (DATS) manages the Interpreting Services Program and oversees the contract with Access Interpreting. Access provides basic and scientific sign language interpreting as well as real-time captioning services to the NIH deaf and hard of hearing community. Services are centrally funded and available to anyone upon request. NIH patients and their families receive priority scheduling and services are available to them 24 hours per day 7 days a week.
