The NIH Police remain committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for NIH employees, contractors, patients and visitors. As a federal facility, the National Institutes of Health adheres to security regulations established under Executive Order 14111 and guidance from the Interagency Security Committee regarding prohibited items on federal property.
NIH personnel are reminded that the following items are prohibited on NIH facilities, including buildings, grounds and parking areas:
- Firearms (No Carry Permit Exceptions)
- Explosives
- Archery equipment
- Dangerous weapons
- Knives with blades exceeding 2.5 inches
- Narcotics and controlled substances, including marijuana
- Alcoholic beverages of any kind, whether open or unopened
Possession of prohibited items on NIH property may result in serious consequences, including:
- Confiscation of the restricted item
- Removal from NIH property
- Administrative or disciplinary action
- Criminal charges, as applicable
Smoking and Tobacco Policy
The NIH Police are also responsible for enforcing the NIH smoking policy. While possession of tobacco products is permitted, smoking is prohibited on NIH campuses and is a chargeable violation under 45 CFR § 3.24(f). This prohibition includes:
- Cigarette smoking
- Vaping or use of electronic nicotine delivery systems
- Marijuana use
The policy applies to all NIH property and remains in effect even when individuals are inside their personal vehicles while on campus.
Vehicle Inspections
Employees are further reminded that all vehicles and their occupants entering or present at NIH locations are subject to inspection and search in accordance with 41 CFR Part 102-74.
