NIH Plans Online Take Your Child to Work Day Events

On the fourth Thursday in April each year, the NIH plans a fun-filled, inspiring "Take Your Child to Work Day."  While the NIH-wide event, originally scheduled for April 23, was canceled this year, several institutes and offices devised creative online programs for staff and their families, fit for a time of physical distancing.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke hosted their popular "Ask Dr. Science Head" (also known as Dr. David Thomas from the Office of Research on Women's Health) on Zoom. Students were able to pose questions about the brain, body and nature and try to stump "the world's smartest scientist." The Center for Scientific Review also hosted an event via Zoom that included two experiments and a story time.

Other organizations devised brand new programs.  For instance, the Office of Intramural Training and Education planned the first ever NIH OD "Invite a Scientist Into Your Home" event, with NIH intramural trainees volunteering to meet with small groups of school children to talk about science and to answer any questions they might have. The Office of Human Resources (OHR) scheduled a day of virtual engagement events for the children of OHR parents in their OneOHR Yammer Group. Activities included a #SayCheese photo booth, #TalktoMe interviews, anti-bullying training, wellness sessions and cooking lessons.

Kudos to all the NIH staff who, despite the challenge of our current situation, managed to plan educational and fun online activities to introduce a future generation of employees to the NIH and essential professional skills, and to teach them why their parents' work is so important to the NIH!
