Laboratory Equipment — the Unsung Contribution to Scientific Discovery

NIH is home to all-star scientists that conduct cutting-edge research. Their work is often ground-breaking and even Nobel-prize worthy. However, without the proper laboratory equipment needed to conduct research, scientists would be stuck with great ideas and no way to execute them. This is where the Division of Scientific Equipment and Instrumentation Services (DSEIS) comes in. DSEIS provides laboratory equipment sales, rental, fabrication and maintenance to all of NIH’s intramural laboratories and has done so for over 30 years.

A recent example of DSEIS’s critical contribution was when Dr. Steven Rosenberg, Chief of the Surgery Branch and Head of the Tumor Immunology Section at NCI, and a pioneer in developing effective immunotherapies and gene therapies in cancer, needed to purchase 10 Heracell Vios 160i incubators for a renovated clean room space. Determined to find a quicker and less expensive avenue over dealing directly with the vendor, the Surgery Branch turned to DSEIS for assistance. DSEIS was able to deliver a lower cost and faster alternative. Additionally, the Surgery Branch was able to hand off the administrative purchasing burden to DSEIS and get the lab up and running sooner than anticipated.

Other Exciting News at DSEIS

DSEIS has a few new faces — Tammie Edwards and Jerry Tyus. Tammie is the new Acting Director of DSEIS and still the current Chief of the Medical Arts Branch. Jerry, DSEIS’ new Laboratory Equipment Maintenance Chief, is returning to NIH after four years at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). Mr. Tyus received his degree in biomedical electronics from Thomas Edison State University (Trenton, NJ) and brings over 15 years of equipment maintenance knowledge and experiences back to the NIH.
