Keeping You Safe on NIH Shuttles

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, many people rely on NIH Shuttles. The shuttles provide warmth in the winter, shelter from the rain, give aging knees and hips a rest, and can get you to your destination quicker while allowing you to safely check your email.

Like other institutions and organizations, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the Division of Amenities and Transportation Services (DATS) transportation programs. Due to the mandatory telework policy, off-campus shuttles have been suspended except for Fishers Lane, NCI Shady Grove and NCI Express. The number of on-campus shuttles was increased to serve patients and staff from Groups A & B, who mostly work in the Clinical Center and research labs on the main campus. As additional staff return to work, DATS will monitor the demand for shuttles and adjust resources to meet those demands.

According to Transportation Program Manager for shuttles, Louise Davis, "Safety is our top priority." All shuttles are cleaned and disinfected twice a day, as well as rotated regularly from inventory to allow disinfecting sprays to do their job. We also installed plexiglass barriers around the drivers for additional safety and require all passengers to wear facial coverings. Shuttles will not proceed from a stop if someone onboard is not properly wearing a facial covering. These measures are taken to ensure shuttles are as safe as possible for everyone.

DATS consistently monitors shuttle ridership for social distancing and to meet the goal of keeping ridership below 50% capacity. Additionally, DATS asks that riders continue to use social distancing etiquette while riding the shuttles.
