Fire Marshal Website Improvements

The ORS Division of the Fire Marshal (DFM) has improved its services to customers by expanding and updating its web site. The following outlines the major enhancements made:

  • Home Page: Services and organization are explained in greater detail to enable customers to determine which DFM team or supervisor typically handles the various services provided. For leased facilities, links to respective fire marshal offices have been added. A map is included to help customers find DFM in their remote location in the Bethesda Building 15 residence group.
  • Staff Directory: This new page lists all DFM staff and supervisors, their direct phone numbers, and primary areas of responsibility. Customers can quickly find which inspector or engineer to contact for a specific building, facility, or campus, as well as how the teams are divided in two global email groups.
  • FAQs: This new page was developed to enable customers to find answers to questions fielded often by DFM staff. Many address hazards such as heaters, cooking, electrical, storage, and corridor use. Some explain the boundaries of responsibilities between DFM and other divisions withing the Security and Emergency Response group.
  • DFM History: This new page lists major milestones in the organization and development of formal fire prevention and protection efforts at the NIH since the inception of DFM's predecessor in 1987.
  • Administrative Interpretations: Added to this page most recently is a new policy, Remote Inspections and Consultations. DFM has maintained a presence on campus throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but remote activities have expanded to meet NIH's guidelines for safe distancing and occupancy limits.

Please visit https://www.ors.od.nih.gov/ser/dfm/Pages/default.aspx and bookmark it for future use. Retained is the online fire hazard reporting tool, which can be used anonymously if desired. Any feedback can be directed to Fire Marshal Mat Chibbaro, P.E., DFM Director, at mat.chibbaro@nih.gov.

Along with the overview of these web site changes, DFM would like to introduce its two newest fire protection engineers. Calvin Kane, P.E. (photo above), comes to us from the ORF's Office of Hospital Physical Environment. Jon Fan (photo below) previously worked as a fire protection consultant and for the National Park Service. Both are graduates of the University of Maryland's Fire Protection Engineering program.
