Bioinformatics Support Service at the NIH Library

The NIH Library offers bioinformatics support services for NIH staff and select HHS agencies. This free service features bioinformatics consulting and training, complemented by analysis tools and databases hosted on high-performance computing workstations in the NIH Library and other open sources in NIH.


Consultations and Tutorials

The NIH Library provides consultations on how to use bioinformatics resources available through the NIH Library, the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), R packages, and others. Consultations can also be requested to address research questions, such as:

  • I have single cell RNA-seq cell bash data, how do I do trajectory analysis?
  • How do I make sense of a long list of differentially expressed genes?
  • How do I write a BASH script to automate the typing of several UNIX commands?
  • Given a list of variants, how do I filter the variants based on the clinical study?
  • How do I interpret the analysis results?

One-on-one tutorials are offered for the analysis tools and databases available via the Library's high-performance computer workstations. In addition, tutorials are provided for open source tools on a user's computer or for those used through NIH High Performance Computing (HPC) systems.

Training

The NIH Library offers free bioinformatics classes. The classes focus on using open source tools, public databases, analyses and bioinformatics scripting used in clinical and research studies, as well as vendor-led training for NIH Library-licensed bioinformatics resources. Analysis Tools and Databases

The NIH Library provides licenses for over 20 bioinformatics tools and databases, including GeneSpring, Genomatix, Partek, MetaCore, and IPA and IVA from QIAGEN. These tools are hosted on three high-performance bioinformatics workstations in the Library, which may be reserved online. Additionally, the NIH Library provides select floating licenses that can be installed on users' computers.
