Aging in place means having the ability to remain safely, comfortably and independently in your home and community as you grow older. It is about maintaining choice, independence, dignity and connection while preparing for changing needs.
Why Plan Ahead?
Aging in place is easier when you plan before you need additional support. Changes in health, mobility, transportation, finances or family circumstances can happen unexpectedly. Planning early gives you more options and greater flexibility.
Helpful Suggestions
- Evaluate your home: Improve lighting, remove trip hazards and consider future accessibility needs such as grab bars, handrails or a first-floor bedroom and bathroom.
- Plan for transportation: Consider how you will get to appointments, shopping, work and social activities if driving becomes difficult.
- Build your support network: Stay connected with family, friends, neighbors, community organizations and other resources.
- Review your finances: Consider future housing, healthcare, transportation, home modifications and caregiving expenses.
- Use technology: Explore telehealth, smart-home devices, emergency alert systems and other tools that can support independence.
- Prioritize well-being: Stay physically active, socially connected, mentally engaged and involved in meaningful activities.
Start Today
You do not need to plan everything at once. Ask yourself:
“What would I need to remain safe, independent, connected and engaged if my circumstances change?"
